Eye Doctor

Adia had another appointment with an eye doctor Thursday. I didn't trust her other doctor's wait and see diagnoses. I was worried that if there really was a problem, waiting wouldn't be a very bad idea. The sooner you treat vision problems in children, the better. Adia did really well in the waiting room. They had a whole little area just for kids. She was all smiles for the assistant and even let her do a puff test in one eye. After she realized what the puff test did, she wasn't about to cooperate for the second eye. We had a bit of a wait for the doctor though. I kept Adia busy by letting her sit in the exam chair. She thought it was pretty cool.

Adia sat in my lap in the chair when it was time to be examined. Adia was really cooperative and when the doctor asked her to point at the elephant, she actually did. Part of me thinks it was just an accident, but the doctor was impressed. She did a bunch of tracking tests with Adia and then Adia got pixie sprayed. Meaning she got her eyes dilated AGAIN. She only fussed for a moment, but was more pissed off than upset. We went back to the waiting room for another 30 minutes while her eyes dilated. When they brought us back to the exam room, Adia wasn't happy. It was past 11, which is when she normally goes down for a nap. She started crying and nothing I did would make it better. The assistant finally came in and turned on Finding Nemo so Adia would calm down. Surprisingly it worked. Shortly thereafter the doctor came back. They did some more tracking tests and she looked into Adia's eyes. Adia was a perfect angel for the whole thing.

The doctor thinks Adia has a pseudo lazy eye. There were a couple times when she though she saw her eye veer off, but it didn't really. Since Adia has a wide nose bridge (like her mommy), it's making her eyes look like they're not looking together when they really are. When Adia gets more cartilage in her nose, it shouldn't look that way anymore. So, she has to grow into her nose. All her eye structures are perfect. She's farsighted, but within the normal range for children her age. She is actually towards the lesser end. Her eyes also track really well and are very straight together. The doctor does want to see her again in 6 months, just to be sure nothing changed. Adia was very happy to be leaving.

When we got home, Adia went right to sleep. She was exhausted. She was only asleep for a little over a hour when Gampa and Unky Eck arrived. They were picking us up to head back to the coast. We loaded all out stuff into the car before and woke her up. She didn't give me a chance to wake her though. She must have already known it was time to leave. She cried part of the drive and never fell asleep. I fed her 1/2 an eggo and a string cheese.

Our first stop was Gamma and Gampa's house. All of Eck's stuff was out because he's home for the summer. Adia soon discovered it and tried to take it apart. She was sidetracked by the cat. For some reason she's now scared of the cat. She follows it around the house, but runs for the nearest person if it gets too close. When she decided she wanted to pet it, she did fly by pets. She'd run by and gently touch it on the head before running off. Adia had playing with Eck. She closed him in the pantry and would open and close the door, saying "Hi" and "Bye." It was so funny to watch and Adia loved every second of it. Eck said his face hurt from smiling because he though it was so funny too.

We soon went back to DiDi's house. Adia looked all over for DiDi, but couldn't find her because she was still at school. We visited her and then walked home with her. Adia was so happy to see her and all the toys. She ate a good dinner (grilled cheese) and took a bath. It was after 9 before I got her to bed and she woke up at 5:45 the next morning. I think she would have gone back to sleep, but when she woke up, she realized where she was. She jumped out of bed and went running for DiDi's room. DiDi wasn't so happy with the early wake up call.

We spent the morning at DiDi's house. Adia only took a 45 minute nap and then ate lunch. Since it was lunchtime for DiDi, we headed over to surprise her. It was already really hot outside and we had come to the coast to escape the heat from the valley. It backfired a little. (DiDi read in the paper that it was 99 in Florence on Friday and only 88 in Eugene) Adia and I were only planning to stay for lunch, but DiDi said her class would love to meet Adia. They haven't seen her since December (I think) and were always complaining that they see pictures, but never her. We didn't know how she'd react, but she seemed to really like them. She was a little spooked at first, but was soon talking and walking around. When they left for PE, Adia tried to follow them. I thought she was going to cry when she couldn't. She was so happy when they came back. She also has several new boyfriends. I don't know what it is about boys and Adia, but Scott's going to be in some serious trouble. One of them let Adia play with his bracelet and told me after school that if he gets another one, he'll give it to DiDi to give to Adia. I thought that was super sweet.

After school, Adia started to lose it. She'd been awake almost all day with hardly any nap. When she got back to DiDi's house, she seemed ok, but had another meltdown when we went to the store. She grumpily ate some dinner and then freaked out at bath time. The only way she'd get in the tub was if I joined her. She clung to me at first and started crying when I washed her hair. Eventually she was back to herself and I was able to get out. I thought she was going to stay in forever though because it was so much cooler than the tub. I got her to sleep by 8:30, but it wasn't an easy task. She fought hard and kept coughing. I put vapor rub on her chest and it helped for a little bit. I went to bed with her around 10 because I was worried she was going to wake up crying again.

She was up at 6:20 today, which wasn't too bad, but still early. She went running in to see DiDi again, but couldn't get her out of bed. She ate a good breakfast and we headed back to the store to make a few returns. Adia was in a pretty good mood, but when we came out of the store, it was already heating up again. I think Adia's running a fever again too so I dosed her with Tylenol. After a snack and a big fight, she's napping. I don't think it will last long, but anything should help. After she wakes up and eats lunch, we're headed to gamma and gampa's house.

Still Sick

Adia woke up bright eyed and bushy tailed at 7. I was not so bright eyed. I guess she gets over colds a little faster than her dear old mom. At first she actually didn't seem sick at all. That quickly changed though. Soon she was back to being cranky. She would wander around the living room, grabbing her right ear and screaming "owwie!" She was also running a low fever so I gave her more Tylenol. Once the Tylenol kicked in, she seemed mostly ok. She did only want to sit on the couch with me or be within a couple feet of me. That's not usual Adia behavior.

She didn't want to eat much for breakfast either. She had maybe 1/2 an eggo and wasn't interested in anything else. Her morning bath made her feel a little better. It cooled her off because between her low fever and the house heating up, we were both overheating. We played a little bit before she took her nap.

When she woke up from her nap, she was horribly cranky. At first I thought it was because she woke up too early, but she started tugging her ear again. I took her temp and it was 99. I gave her more Tylenol and once it kicked in, she was willing to eat lunch. She ate quite a bit, but I decided to call the doctor's office in case she had an ear infection. Adia snuggled in my lap until it was time to leave. She was still acting lethargic and didn't want to play. Of course, the second we got ready to go, she started to perk up. She was talking and laughing in the car and walked into doctor's office with me. She wasn't running a temperature when we got there, but she was pissed to get weighed. When I set her on the scale, she started screaming like she was getting shots. She now weighs about 19 lbs 8oz, but that was with a diaper and lots of squirming. She wanted to play with all the toys, magazines and books and when she notice the cabinet under the sink had handles, she really got excited. She walked over there and started tugging on the handles. Nothing happened at first and I figured they were locked. Nope! She pulled one side open and it startled her so bad that it closed it. She looked at me, mouth opened in surprise and tried opening it again. When it opened again, it startled her again and pushed it closed. She then noticed she was wearing only a diaper and started playing with the tabs. She knows how to take her diaper off. She would peel off one tab, smile at me and when I told her to put her diaper back on, she'd casually stick it back on. This game went on for several minutes until the doctor came in.

Adia came running back to me when her doctor came into the room. Her doctor asked what had been going on and I told her that every time the Tylenol wore off, she'd grab her ear and say owwie. Her doctor was amazed that she could communicate so well. Yep, Adia communicates very very well. Occasionally in full sentences and when you ask her something, she almost always responds. It's rather scary. She checked both ears and she said they look perfectly fine. When she tried to check Adia's mouth, Adia wouldn't open her mouth. I asked Adia to show us her teeth and she did, but wouldn't open. Then I asked for her tongue and she stuck it out. Her doctor looked at us in shock. Yes, Adia knows quite a few body parts, but half the time she's too stubborn to actually show that she knows them. Her doctor told me that everything looked fine and just give her lots of TLC and keep dosing her with Tylenol until she feels better. If she still acts like her ear is bothering her in a few days, come back because it may be a visible infection by then. Adia didn't mind the whole ordeal because she got a sticker out of it.

We got home and Adia started playing normally. Scott got up and she got excited. She ate a whole banana and then we headed outside to get the mail. Scott came too. Adia was happy to be outside. We brought her ball to play some soccer, but wouldn't show off her kicking ability while I was filming. She's actually pretty good at controlling the ball when she doesn't get sidetracked. We eventually got tired of keeping her out of the wood chips and rocks so we went inside.

Adia was trying to climb in her chair long before dinner. She was also getting super cranky again. It was been over 4 hours since her last dose of Tylenol so I gave her more. She ate some of her dinner and was happy to get in the bath. By then our house was really hot and all the fans weren't helping too much. We played until bedtime. Adia kept picking up her baby doll and bringing it to me. Then she'd take it back, hug it to her chest and kiss its head. She's been so sweet with baby dolls and stuffed animals lately. At 8, Adia was getting tired so I took her into her bedroom. She wasn't happy about it at all. We read several books and when she stopped letting me read, I turned off the lamp and attempted to get her to sleep. She fought me for 15 minutes before finally relaxing. I laid her down, but she had me hand in a death grip. If I tried to move my hand, she'd open her eyes and give me the saddest look. She finally fell asleep and I was able to leave the room.

I entered Adia in the Parent's Magazine Cover Model Contest. Please vote for her:

Happy Anniversary!

Scott and I have been married 2 years today. If someone had told me at my wedding that in two years, you'll be cuddling and wiping the nose of a sick 1 year old, I'm not sure I would have believed it. Well, that's what I did today. Adia and I are both really sick. She's running a 101.5 temp and living on tylenol. She's been eating pretty well despite needing to come up for air. I wasn't aware something so small could make so much snot or drool. It's everywhere! We've been carrying around a dishtowel (I bleach my towels so don't worry) just to keep her face clean. She hates it too. She's constantly wiping at her face, trying to wipe it away, but not having very much luck. She soaked two shirts today with drool because she has to breathe through her mouth.

To make matters worse, she's teething too! So that increases her drool production and her crankiness. Then we can add in that no one got any sleep last night. Adia wouldn't hold still or stay asleep. It was awful. She took a short nap today and has mostly just wanted to cuddle. I feel so bad for her because I know how awful I feel. My head is killing me. Hopefully it doesn't develop a sinus or ear infection.

She went to bed by 8 tonight. Scott attempted to put her to sleep. She was fine with him reading to her, but the second he started to snuggle, she started screaming "Mommy!" I read her one book before she fell asleep against me. She was snoring within seconds.
