Monkey on her back

I bought Adia one of those monkey backpack harness thingys today. Adia keeps trying to run instead of holding my hand when we're outside or in a store. One of my mommy friends showed off the one she bought her daughter so I had to copy and buy Adia one too. We tried it out when we went to get the mail. It was mostly a disaster. Adia first turned around the tried to climb the steps. After pulling her off those she ran towards the muddy, swampy grass. Of course she fell. Then every few feet she'd trip or sit down. It was like she never knew how to walk before. She also kept grabbing onto my leg or trying to hold my hand. Give her a taste of freedom and she doesn't know what to do!

Quick update

Adia's still running a low grade fever. She slept better last night, but woke up at 2:30am. I apparently didn't respond fast enough because I met her in the hallway, toddling toward me. She's not terribly coordinated at night so it was funny to watch. I fell into my arms and her whole body just went limp against me. She spent the rest of the night with me. She felt hot to the touch so we slept without covers and woke up sopping wet anyway. She was up again at 5:30am, but an 8oz bottle and she was out again until almost 9! She was such a happy, silly girl when we got up, but she did pee out the side of her diaper again. They just sag too much when they get soaked.

I moved Adia's booster seat to a different position in the kitchen. She likes to push off the table and tip backwards. One of these days she's going to flip backwards and I didn't want that happening. If you pull her out so she can't push against the table, she can't reach her food. Now she's wedged between the table and the bookshelf. She can't really tip now and if she does, she won't be going very far back. She'll also be able to see out the window. Only problem will be cleaning up the food she throws on the floor.

Adia drank out milk out of her sippy today. I started putting her water cup and a sippy cup with milk within her reach at the table. If she wants water, she'll grab her cup, hold it and drink out of it. She's pretty good about not pouring it all over herself, but the problem comes when she sets it back down. About half the time it tips and pours water all over the table. She always looks so upset when that happens, but at least water's easy to clean up. She just started holding and drinking out of the sippy. She only dropped it once on the floor and managed to tip it up enough to get milk. Her only complaint, she can't dunk her waffle in the milk.

She's now fascinated with the potty chair. It has a lid that she likes lifting. Today she kept putting half a plastic egg inside of it and then taking it out and doing it all over again. She'll do it over and over again. She was so sidetracked with the chair, I was able to wash my hair before she wanted in the shower. We showered and I set her on the potty chair afterwards. She looked at me like I was crazy, but I kept asking her, "Can you tinkle on the potty?" and making a "sss" noise. She'd smile and repeat the noise back to me. After a few minutes I figured she didn't need to go so I let her get up. She stood up, squatted in front of the chair and peed! I have a feeling she knows what she's doing, but is only going to do it on her terms. I told her that the tinkle goes in the potty. She pointed at her puddle and then lifted the lid and looked in her chair. Crazy kid!

Now she's down for a nap. It was a fight. She was chasing me around, whining so I knew she needed a nap, but she wouldn't stay in bed. Every time she started messing around or kicking me, I'd say, "Fine, you want to play, I'm not staying in your room." I'd leave and go out to the couch. A couple minutes later, she'd follow, rubbing her eyes and crying. I'd pick her up, take her back and try again. It took 4 or 5 tries, but now she's asleep. I hope she gets a good nap today, instead of one of her short 1 hour ones.

Adia experienced the play area at the mall on Sunday. I've never let her play there before even though she likes watching the other kids play. She had tons of fun, but it became too dangerous when some older boys started rough housing. Up to the that point she had met a few new friends. She also learned that you can crawl through things. She kept trying to walk through them, but she'd hit her head or fall out the end. She eventually figured it out. Hopefully we can go back again soon, but when we tried to go on Monday, it was packed. Adia's not used to other kids and I'm worried either she'll get hurt or she'll accidentally hurt someone else.

Scott had Monday and Tuesday off so Adia enjoyed having him around. She started to feel a little warm on Tuesday though. She also didn't sleep well at all and was cutting her naps short. I took her temperature and it said 101.4! It's been a while since she's had a fever. I gave her Tylenol and she took a nap on me. She was feeling better at dinner, even though she didn't eat much. Last night was horrible though. She wouldn't stay asleep and was burning up, despite Tylenol. I felt so bad for her, but neither of us got any sleep.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Feet on the table at dinner

She didn't nap well today either and was really clingy. She's been on Tylenol most of the day too. We went to the store and I carried her in the Kozy. She seemed so cuddly and I didn't want to chase her since she won't stay in the cart anymore. She was happy most of the time in the Kozy, only getting mad when she wanted down and I wouldn't let her, of course.

I'm hoping for a good night tonight. I really need some sleep. She wanted me to hold her the whole time I made dinner. She would cry if Scott tried to hold her. She brought her baby doll into the kitchen at one point. She was hugging her and giving her kisses. It was the sweetest thing ever. Much better than when she walks around, holding it by an arm or leg. She didn't eat much for dinner, but did devour a whole piece of her buttered rice toast. She was interested in the beans too, but wanted to squish them rather than eat them.

Adia certainly loves to play peek-a-boo now. She says her version of "boo" and attempts to play it any way she can. She'll hide behind the couch, my laptop, even a cardboard box, just to jump out and say "boo!" Other times she uses a blanket, stuffed animal or her sweatshirt. It's particularly funny during diaper changes if she's wearing a long shirt or dress.

She also likes her "chair." It used to be the rocking chair when she was little, but she's taken it over as her TV chair. She climbs in and out of it all day long, but in the evenings she'll sit in it and watch TV or Scott play video games. She loves it. Occasionally she fall out though and then she's not a happy camper, but the crying never lasts long. She's normally back in it within minutes.

Her tushy's almost healed and we've been having normal poops again. To my relief. That brings me to another exciting thing that happened today. We bought Adia a potty chair on Monday. I thought we might be jumping the gun, but Adia ALWAYS pees after our shower together. Normally she goes to the corner in the bathroom and pees a lake and then will go to the baby gate and strain and grunt until she pees a little puddle. On Tuesday we set her on the potty chair after the shower, but all she did was cry. She was already not feeling well and wanted her nap. It was funny though because she pointed at the chair and asked, "What's that?" I told her it was a potty chair and sit on it and pee. She gave me the funniest look and said, "WHAT?!" It was perfect timing and intonation. Scott and I cracked up over it.

I attempted the potty chair again today and she complained at first. I finished getting dressed, talking to her the entire time. Eventually she started bouncing and seemed perfectly happy. Then she peed! Adia peed on the potty and she's only 12 1/2 months old! I don't know if she'll do it again tomorrow, but I know she can control her bladder. If she sleeps straight through the night, she's usually dry in the morning. She'll pee immediately following her first diaper change. Maybe she'll enjoy the praise and non-wet diapers so much that it will stick.
